Four Simple Steps to Succeed with APA

Okay, so you have to write a paper using APA and you either haven't bought the  manual or it's collecting dust on your bookshelf. Now what?
An expensive looking ebony and gold fountain pen in front of an old book. Both items are resting on a brown table with a reflective surface.
Don't panic. Below are some handy resources to get you started and keep you on track.
You’ll remember APA conventions best when you start putting them to practice. I recommend running through some tutorials to practice the basics of formatting, in-text citations, and referencing. Be careful about the information you use. As with grammar, there is a lot of misinformation on the web when it comes to APA.

Step 1: Use this Free APA Basic Referencing Tutorial

Use the guide on this page to teach yourself the basics of referencing in APA: Referencing Tutorial

Step 2: Practice a variety of Reference and Citations

Next Use OWL Purdue and practice formatting different types of references using the system in the first tutorial. Make sure you also practice in-text citations, which are different than references: OWL PURDUE

Step 3: Writing Your Paper

When you are writing your paper, use the OWL Purdue reference and/or the APA style manual to check your formatting, in-text citations, and references. Look up information about APA referencing as you write. When you are finished your paper, use this checklist to make sure you have used APA correctly: APA CHECKLIST

Step 4: Get Help When You Need it

Tutoring can be a valuable resource to either help you with learning formatting basics or reviewing a paper. Book a free consultation to find out how we can help you succeed with academic writing: Phone Consultation with S.E.E.
